Hey guys , what's your opinion about the broadway cast ?
For myself , i'm a die hard green day fan since the mid nineties . I always liked the ''snotty'' side of this band, the way they were playing fast and insulting crowds , you know , the dirty side of green day . I'm still a fan , and they surprised me with the trilogy , i think they pulled out their best since nimrod .
I was curious , when i saw this weird musicall coming out for broadway . I gave it a chance to surprise me , but after buying the CD , i was totally flat . When i saw the image , even worse . I don't even consider this as green day material , i spent 5$ on a CD just to know , then i set my mind trying to forget what i heard and saw . I know many of you guys will say it's creative and it's art , but i just don't see the connection with what i know and like from green day . It was a great idea to print money and get some more visibility though , and i respect that , if i had a band selling millions , i'd probably take advantage of it . Do you think those guys are really proud of this project ,according to where they came from ... ?
Do you think that this explains the gap between the ol' generation and the new american idiot generation , among green day fans ? You know , some green day fans have been listening to GBH , exploited and the Pistols , some other like Twighlight , one direction and Grease . That makes a very large fanbase with total different tastes and habits , isn't it weird !?!?
One thing for sure , for all those reasons , Green Day gigs will never be the same , the vibe you could feel in the lineup and in the audience , is definitely gone , you can't take punk rock out of the band , but you can take the crowd out of punk rock .
Why we don't see the same phenomenon into NOFX or Rancid gigs for example ?
Let me know your opinion .
Cheers , Johnny

Im a fan of american idiot and quite like the idea of it getting made into a broadway show, but im not a fan of shows and that sort of thing, so although i own the cds, vinyl etc i havent listened to it and really only wanted it for when its time
Old green day rules, american idiot and 21st cb are really good rock albums and the new trilogy were also really good to me - i do hope though that if they make any more albums that they go back to 2 minute fast 3 chord thrash like most of insomniac
I feel that Billie joe is very proud of american idiot and all recent projects, maybe even more than the early albums

First off, I love 'old' Green Day, their first 4 albums shaped my life. Insomniac is my favorite record.
When I heard they were doing a stage show of AI I was a little shocked, I thought it would just be a vague representation of AI done by someone else, not a Green Day thing. However, I managed to see the show when they toured it in the UK, and I was honestly touched by it. I was nearly in tears in some parts, and I'm really not overly emotional! It just made sense. After then watching Broadway Idiot a few months back I see that Green Day (+ Adrienne) had a lot of input which made sense. I have the soundtrack CD which I listen too occasionally, it reminds me of how good it was live.
As for AI changing the "fan base", yes it has, but not totally. The old fans are still there, yes there are a lot of teens who think BJ is hawt etc., but hopefully in 10-20 years they will still be Green Day fans, and also accepting the next lot of newbies to the fanbase. The shows I don't think have changed that much, fan wise. Yeah, they don't do enough small shows anymore, but a pit is a pit no matter where you are ;-)

The musical was good, I saw it once. The soundtrack is great, but it's not my genre. I wouldn't be caught dead listening to that crap. I actually just went through my stuff and deleted the album from my computer, thanks for reminding me of this.
As collectors, I take it we're all old-Green Day fans?

Hmmm , probably yes , but the point here is , when you got into it ? , and why ? , what made you a fan ? Thanks for sharing your point of views , keep going . Basket Case made me a 'fan' of the song.. I was really young when I first heard that song.. too young to care about the artist. When I was 11 they released American Idiot and finally I was old enough.. afterwards I knew the band I got more into punk rock music.. no matter what kind of punk rock. GD opened a whole new world for me.. a young guy without a music direction and born at the end of the world.

About the topic.. I kinda see it like Ronin. At first I was a little disappointed, a musical? Green Day? No way.. but as the first footage appeared on the net I was interested and so when the show hit London I went there to see it! I loved the show!! I have the Broadway cast recording on CD only (not collecting this one). I rarely listen to it but its a great reminder of the musical and the trip to London.. I absolutely love seeing Broadway Idiot! Seeing the show coming together, all the emotions of the actors and the band.. great docu!

Problaly i'm the one narrow minded . I'm geting old , and i start to miss the ol' days . Even if listen to a larger range of music , comparing to when i was 15 , i'm still totally reticent to this musical thing . Trends are suppose to come and go every 30 years , but even if i'm waiting for the 3rd ramones generaton , i think this is not gunna happen again . 1994 was unique , a timewarp , and now it's gone . Call it evolution or regression , i don't think i'll ever feel this way again . I feel a bit ''has been'' bout this . Nowadays , legends start to fall , last week , Dick, lead singer of the subhumans died from an heart attack . All ramones are dead , joe strummer is gone , Knox rom vibrators is sick , most of those pionneers won't get the respect they deserve . If the sound they creted was kept alive by younger musicians , as green day did in the past , maybe it would keep the ball rollng . I never said that ''punk is dead'' because of money or corporations ... but now im about to say RIP punk rock , because punkrockers die , and probably will be forgotten with the years ... When green day , offspring , rancid and other bands got bigger , they were carriying the sound of the late 70's and 80's with them , like a tribute . Do you guys think this will be perpetuated Interesting discussion , keep writing ! It's cool to hear about your point of views , should write down your age , it would give an idea of were you are on the timeline . Cheers to all of you guys , Johnny

I first heard waiting on kerrang and got international superhits for xmas, after listening to that record I found geek stink breath and all the old tracks
I went along to a record fair with my dad a few months later and found 39 smooth on vinyl and bought it cos it said green day and when I heard this record I was like this isn't billie joe is it, looked it up and yes it was I fell in love with green day from here cos I went and bought all the albums after abit of research and then american idiot came out and this was a new sound to me but I still liked it
I would love to hear another band come on the scene that's like green day or alkaline trio, I love these bands old sound

Bit of a late reply to this, but apparently I never read this topic. I totally agree with Johnnydamage's opinion. I also like the old green day and them being 'snotty'. With this new album coming out and reading about how it sounds like the old green day I had my hopes up but after hearing bang bang I was again disappointed. I really love anything up to warning, because I can relate to the songs. Everything that came out since AI is not really what I can relate to. On top of that the music is too polished. I realise this change is not only green day but also myself getting older. When I got into green day I was 16, I'm now 31. Some of the lyrics are not really the same to me as they used to. I listen a lot to shenanigans in lately, when I hear a 'simple' song like do da da I just prefer that over anything released since AI. I guess the old green day is just gone.

I do kinda like the Broadway Cast version (as well as virtually the whole of GD's back catalogue). I think it was Tre Cool who once said that if you couldn't get to see GD (which obviously he can't), it's the next best thing! To go and see the musical.
